Worth noting: You may see some plant purveyors claiming that certain varieties can clear the air of potentially harmful gasses called volatile organic compounds, and according to the Environmental Protection Agency, VOCs can be produced from office equipment such as printers. You’ll have the best chance of success with ceramic or plastic pots, which help retain moisture, while porous ones like terracotta tend to make the soil dry faster, says Darryl Cheng, House Plant Journal creator and author of “ The New Plant Parent. Good office plants should also be suited for the room’s variable temperature and humidity conditions. People tend to choose a plant based on its look rather than its needs, experts say, but for plants to thrive in an office environment, they should be able to withstand low or indirect light and less watering. “ Studies have shown that having plants in the office can reduce stress and increase productivity and the overall mental health of the workers,” says Marc Hachadourian, director of glasshouse horticulture and senior curator of orchids at the New York Botanical Garden. What’s more, bringing in greenery isn’t only an aesthetic upgrade-it can offer mental benefits too.
“Especially when there are lots of plants that are suitable to live through stretches of time without much water and care.”
Many of us may not be going in to an office a full five days a week anymore, but “this doesn’t mean office spaces should become barren, lifeless places of work,” says Rutgers University’s Director of Horticultural Therapy Program Gary Altman.
